Biography
An independent life, in finance and in public
Gwendolyn Beck has lived enough careers for several biographies. She managed national sales for a major airline, traded U.S. government securities on a Wall Street bond floor, advised clients as a vice president at Morgan Stanley, wrote a book to demystify personal finance — and then ran for Congress as an independent.
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, and raised with roots in Virginia and Florida, Beck earned her bachelor's degree from Florida State University, studying international relations with an emphasis on international business. Her working life began in travel and tourism — first as a regional sales manager for the Mid-Atlantic at Thomas Cook Travel, then rising to national sales manager at Eastern Airlines.
When Eastern ceased operations, she made a bold pivot into finance: the New York Institute of Finance, then the bond-trading floor at Credit Suisse in U.S. government securities and taxable fixed income. From 1995 to 2002 she was a Vice President of Investments at Morgan Stanley, with expertise spanning equities, fixed income, currencies, and managed products. After September 11, she turned toward personal financial planning with Wachovia.
In 2008 she published Flirting with Finance, written to make money matters approachable — and appeared on television to teach its lessons. In 2014 she carried her convictions onto the campaign trail in Virginia's 8th Congressional District, running as an independent on a platform she summarized as "fiscally responsible, socially inclusive."
Her community commitments, as she described them during the campaign, included volunteering with the Arlington Agency on Aging and service on the boards of Ladies America and We Will Survive Cancer — the last inspiring her campaign's signature hot pink.
